Backyard Farm Collective develops partnership with Second Helpings, a Central Indiana food rescue and insecurity non-profit organization delivering more than a million meals annually to hungry Hoosiers
We interviewed Emily, Marketing and Communications Manager at Second Helpings to learn more about their organization and how our partnership helps Central Indiana. Here's what she had to say:
What does Second Helpings do?
Second Helpings fights hunger in Central Indiana from every angle. We rescue food that would otherwise be thrown away, prepare it, deliver it to local nonprofits for free, and train people for careers in the culinary industry. We deliver more than a million meals every year—many of them to kids and seniors.
What happens when our food goes to your organization?
Rescued food is sorted in our warehouse and then most likely put to use in our Hunger Relief kitchen, where we currently prepare more than 5,500+ meals every day.
Who is the population that you serve with your outreach?
Second Helpings provides meals and food items to 150+ nonprofit partners in central Indiana, and they serve a variety of populations in need: children, families, adults, seniors, neighbors experiencing homelessness, veterans, and the general public.
How can others get involved to help the Second Helpings mission?
Visit secondhelpings.org to learn about getting involved: maybe it's as a volunteer in our kitchen, organizing a food drive, or making a donation.
Can you share stories to help readers understand why Second Helpings is so important?
There are so many great stories at Second Helpings! A couple of my favorite recent stories are here:
- Story about someone who receives our meals at Fathers & Families
- Story about a graduate of our Culinary Job Training program
- We rescued our 50 millionth pound last spring
Do you need volunteers or any other assistance from others? If so, please tell us how others can help.
Yes, we always need more volunteers! Second Helpings is a volunteer-powered organization. Every day, volunteers make every part of our mission possible – from chopping produce to answering phones, from delivering meals to teaching students.
Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Saturday, in the kitchen, warehouse, office, and more.
